Well, we’ve got the sun. It’s freezing cold, snowy, patches of ice, but I will take the sun!! Just the sight of the sun out my windows warms my soul, makes me smile, and helps me begin the countdown out of the winter mess of blues…

So, to celebrate the sun, why not take a bit of time, collect your thoughts, make a list, and place your market orders from the comfort of wherever you are. Old99Farm Market:  Old 99 Farm, week of Feb 15 2015


Just finished a 485 page book, The Third Plate, by well-respected chef/author, Dan Barber. Yes, it’s about food and food production, and it’s provocative.

For example,“At the heart of today’s optimistic farm-to-table food culture is a dark secret: the local food movement has failed to change how we eat. It has also offered a false promise for the future of food. Our concern over factory farms and chemically grown crops might have sparked a social movement, but even the most enlightened eating of today is ultimately detrimental to the environment and to individual health.”

He’s a permaculturist, without using the word, and, judging by the encyclopedic range of quotes and books listed in the bibliography, he hasn’t heard of it. No matter. It’s wonderful when ‘earth care, people care, fare share’ can be invoked without mentioning the ‘p’ word.

Example: “Food production is a disturbance, but the goal is to “disturb feelingly,” to disturb in a way that mimics natural systems. Whether you’re talking about a goose, a fish, or raising wheat, you’ve got to intimately know the environment from which it is coming and mimic nature to produce the best flavor.”

My point? Most people here on this list are interested in healthy food that tastes good. But care less about the systemic consequences of how that food is produced. We should, because if we don’t, one household at a time, we’re just as responsible as Monsanto, laggard politician or any monocrop farmer of ruining the world we live in. And that to such a degree that our children will curse our graves.

The solution, Barber says, lies in the “third plate”: an integrated system of vegetable, grain, and livestock production that is fully supported—in fact, dictated—by what we choose to cook for dinner. And in other news…

In its most recent report, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) calculated how much carbon we can emit and still keep a decent chance of limiting warming to two degrees above pre-industrial levels. This is known as a carbon budget. Two degrees is the internationally-accepted point beyond which climate change risks become unacceptably high.

As of 2010, we could release a maximum of about 1000 billion more tonnes of carbon dioxide and still have a 50:50 chance of staying below two degrees, according to the IPCC.

A very recent paper (published online in Nature, http://www.nature.com/nature/journal/v517/n7533/full/nature14016.html on Jan 7 2015) compares this allowable carbon budget with scientists’ best estimate of how much oil, gas and coal exist worldwide in economically recoverable form, known as “reserves”.

Were we to burn all the world’s known oil, gas and coal reserves, the greenhouse gases released would blow the budget for two degrees three times over, the paper finds.

The implication is that any fossil fuels that would take us over-budget will have to be left in the ground. Globally, this equates to 88 per cent of the world’s known coal reserves, 52 per cent of gas and 35 per cent of oil, according to the new research.

For us Canadians, that means 75/24/82 percent of oil, gas and coal respectively. Just consider how THAT will affect your standard of living???

Here at the farm, we had the mercury dip to -30dC last night; it’s finally in a range where Celcius sounds a bad as Fahrenheit! Frozen water lines, tractors that won’t start, frozen combs on roosters. Global warming is a misnomer, it should be climate weirding, because even these deep freezes are a consequence of global climate balancing.

Yes we have food. Delicious food, tho perhaps not as good as Dan Barbers. You will enjoy the carrots for sure. Pre cut squash in one kg bags, frozen, celeriac, leeks, and green onions, as well as eggs, flour and meats.

Carrell Farms has added Alpaca to their offerings! Be adventurous and try some. To me it is a bit sweeter than Pork and delicious! Of course their wonderful Water Buffalo offerings are also available! Try some Soup Bones for wonderful Bone Broth! Add in the Ox Tail for an especially delicious treat! Roasts, steaks, ground …they have it all!

Jay and Patti Parsons of Dances With Bees are back from vacation — just in time for the yucky weather here! Check out Honey offerings! Since I have been making a lot of soup, I have been using the cutting board a great deal. Jay’s Golden Beeswax Food Grade Wood Finish is awesome! Keeps my cutting board in great shape. Recently while looking for a cast iron pot in the plethora of boxes that must stay packed, I ran across a cutting board that I inherited from my Mother. It looked ROUGH!. I brought it upstairs and treated it twice with Jay’s Magic Potion and now I have another great cutting board! This stuff is amazing


Jeff and Tammy of Peacefield Farm had an issue in their Greenhouse and it may be a little while before they have items available. Please keep them in your prayers.


It is not to late to help out with Tammy Burnells youth organization’s project. Kathy, as the fearless leader at Lilburn sorts items delivered at Crossfit each week, loads them in her car, unloads them at Lilburn and ensures that everything is in place when Members walk through the door to pickup their order.


I know it is a thankless task! Although I have tried to paint a picture for folks, people do not realize all of the ‘steps’ that make Market happen! Perhaps you can’t unless you participate! But I do — to the Coordinators and Volunteers – I am in your debt!


Thankfully, Miss Sarah has returned from the West Coast and will be back at Hamilton Mill this week. Thanks to Karen Thain and Surata Wood and her daughter for all of the assistance with getting set up last week!


Also thanks go out to Dabrielle and Bruce Wills for the use of their Cargo Van which allowed all of the items for Market to be transported in 1 trip! The use of the van also allowed me to leave the heaviest items, (milk and meat) in coolers in the van for folks to collect on the way out to their cars! Since I cannot lift over 4lbs, all of the help was invaluable! Please know I appreciate you all! Sarah will see you on Thursday!


The weather up here in the mountains is turning nasty; but The Black Lab and I are prepared. I pray that everyone will remain safe and warm down Atlanta way! By Thursday things should be dry but COLD and I will be making the trip down to Lawrenceville!

Due to delays in their expansion efforts, Jenn Pierson and the Elevate team are still remodeling their new location across from the Veteran’s Hospital at Bay Pines. We will start delivering there sometime in March. All folks who have been picking up at Elevate Fitness are now offered either 1) an option to pick up in Historic Kenwood or 2) have home delivery until we can find a new drop spot. This week we had hoped to introduce a variety of pork sausages and bacon produced by a USDA inspected facility in Sarasota. Grower Jim Kuntzelman of Sunset Ranch in Dover has been delayed due to family matters that take precedent. We plan to provide these wonderful new products on our Market very soon.

Had planned for Florida cucumbers and California artichokes this Market but neither were delivered in condition as expected. We are fussy for quality! We did, however, get those wonderful looking Covington yams from NC and they are in perfect condition. The romanesco cauliflower also looks amazing as does the Florida yellow squash!

MISSING GERALDSON COMMUNITY FARM
For the past several Markets we haven’t been able to order from GCF because their CSA members are their priority. As a result, the remaining variety has been quite small. This is all due to wet weather and the consequences of that on their location in Bradenton. They have such a gorgeous stretch of land but it floods. Operations Manager Christa Leonard is a true pro and is doing a great job of managing this challenge. If you ever have a chance to drive down and visit, you will not want to come back to the city!

Once you have submitted your order, if in doubt about what you owe, you can always confirm what you have been charged for by checking your account history and viewing your most current invoice. Also, since your vegetables are picked fresh within 24 hours of delivery, they should be lasting for WEEKS in your refrigerator. When you accept delivery, please take a few minutes to inspect your order to protect your vegetables from unnecessary spoilage. Lastly, it is imperative that you understand our policy on Unclaimed Orders found on our Q&A page. When you make a purchase you are agreeing to abide by this policy.

Our Market has high standards for what it sells. Despite that—as seasons transition—the challenges of evolving weather and pesky insects can take its toll on the crops. Market Growers are being very selective about what they are willing to present to you. No, it won’t always be picture perfect (which is part of its charm) and sometimes an insect is going to evade capture! But we won’t send you anything that we wouldn’t eat ourselves. If for any reason we have goofed and you are dissatisfied, please report it to me right away so we can rectify the situation. That’s how we get better and we all benefit from that. Your satisfaction is key to our success as a resource for St. Petersburgs’ lovers of chemical-free, organically & locally grown vegetables.

Pardon the early weblog, y’all. As you may have noticed, we’re a little snowed in today. So snowed in, in fact, that we can’t make it to this evening’s pickup. We don’t want anyone else risking the roads either, but we do want you to get all the great food you ordered! That’s why we’re moving today’s pickup to tomorrow. If you have an order to pick up, and will not be able to come tomorrow between 4:30 and 6:00PM, please let us know!

In the meantime, there’s no better way to spend your snow-day than browsing The Market, and cooking up something delicious that’s sure to warm your kitchen and your bones. While you’re digging through the pantry, take a look at your reserves. Obviously, Arkansas can go from sunny seventies to sleety single-digits in the span of a single weekend, and it’s probably not the last time we’ll see ice this year. Keeping a few days worth of non-perishables on hand is just plain good sense. If your stock is running low, allow me to suggest a trip to the new and improved Whole Foods Market in West Little Rock. Stop by this Thursday, and not only can you stock up on everything you need to weather the winter, but 1% of sales goes to ALFN! We’ll even be there with bells on! So stop by, say “hi,” stock up, and bring a friend!
